The 2024/25 season will go down in the history books for Viktoria Köln as a year that shows what can be achieved through joint effort and tireless commitment. At the beginning of the season, expectations were low: both experts and fans predicted Viktoria as a potential relegation team. This was supported by prominent departures such as Stefano Russo, Ben Voll and Luca Marseiler, who left the squad. Nevertheless, the team proved that the loss of talented players does not have to mean the end. New additions such as striker Semih Güler and keeper Dudu brought a breath of fresh air into the dressing room, which meant the team was motivated right from the start.
Successful season with many highlights
The start of the season was marked by a narrow defeat against Dynamo Dresden (1:2), but the team never stuck its head in the sand. Impressive victories followed, such as the 2-1 win against Mannheim and the convincing 3-1 successes in Munich and 3-0 against Hansa Rostock. After a strong first half of the season with 30 points, it was already clear: there is a community at work here that sticks together.
The change of coach, in which Olaf Janßen handed over to assistant coach Marian Wilhelm, brought a breath of fresh air. In the second half of the season, the team collected 29 points, so that in the end they had 59 points - 6th place in the 3rd league! Such successes are special, especially since the 3rd league, as the third highest division in Germany, offers numerous challenges, which the team mastered brilliantly, such as Wikipedia clearly describes.
Talents and community effort
There was also a remarkable development in the promotion of young talent: a total of 15 players from the youth performance center were used in the first team and made a significant contribution to the success. Jonah Sticker, who was on the pitch for 3,244 minutes, and Florian Engelhardt, who played 2,869 minutes, were particularly key defensive players. Strikers Güler and Lobinger combined for an impressive 35 goals, while Said El Mala netted 13 times.
The 12 home wins resulted in an increase in spectator numbers at the Höhenberg Sportpark, which underlines the family feeling of this club. How Transfer market reported, the Cologne team experienced another highlight by winning the DFB Cup against Alemannia Aachen, which meant the 10th cup victory in the club's history. This also ensures the club’s participation in the DFB Cup in the 2025/26 season.
