Negotiations in Istanbul: No agreement between Russia and Ukraine!
In the new round of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine about a possible ceasefire that took place in Istanbul today, as expected, there was no breakthrough. Despite the tense atmosphere and great interest, the expressions of the Russian delegation in Ukraine were more of an amused impression. These conversations, which only lasted about an hour, did not make progress in terms of the longing -awaited fire break. The Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj said that he was waiting for a full report by Defense Minister Rustem Umjerow while important documents were exchanged, including a list of prisoners of war that are now to be returned. Among other things, this list includes prisoners of war with a bad state of health and prisoners under the age of 25, reports the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger . However, there is little hope about continuation of the talks, because Russia provided clear conditions in advance that seem extremely difficult to fulfill. According to reports from Tagesschau Moscow made the possibility of a break to the demands that western countries will stop their arms deliveries to Ukraine and the mobilization in Kiev is ended. This ensures a lot of frowning and horror in the Ukrainian government, because Selenskyj has been calling for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire as a first step to end the conflict since March. But the Russians are adamant, which makes the negotiations even more difficult.
political tensions and international dimensions
The political situation is also influenced by the activities outside of the negotiations. Donald Trump announced that talks about a ceasefire should also start in Saudi Arabia. Ross also seems to emphasize with Russia about the need for a dialogue. Trump himself described the conversations as "very good and productive" and would like to find a possible solution, whereby he also addresses control over Ukrainian power plants, as the Fri reports.
In the middle of all of this, the situation of the Ukrainian minors who were deported by Russia is becoming increasingly urgent. Andrij Jermak, head of the Ukrainian presidential office, reported that more than 19,500 minors from Russia were "forced", of which over 1,000 were able to return thanks to international mediation. This is an unsustainable state that also focuses on the international community and cannot remain unnoticed.
While the talks in Istanbul were eagerly awaited, the current status is rather disappointing. Experts are skeptical whether both sides can make a breakthrough that the permanent dispute over the fire break will continue to stop in the future. With a clear line from Moscow and little willingness to compromise, an agreement could remain a further away goal.
