Cologne: Painful animal husbandry - rabbits and cockatiel rescued!

In Cologne, two animals were recently freed from catastrophic keeping conditions - a case that is causing turmoil not only at the animal shelter, but also at the entire animal protection community. The veterinary office rescued an Angora rabbit and a badly mistreated cockatiel from a private apartment. The animals lived in a small, dirty cage that was not only unsuitable but simply scandalous. The calf reported that the two animals had hardly any space to move around and were severely restricted in their living situation.

The condition of the cockatiel is particularly worrying. He was found under a pretext of abuse - his tail and parts of his wings had apparently been cut off with scissors. This highlights the cruel conditions in which the animals were kept. During the rescue operation it also became clear that the Angora rabbit was living in an aviary that was not at all suitable for its species. Both animals have now been taken to the Cologne-Dellbrück animal shelter, where they are now being housed in a species-appropriate manner.

A look at the legal basis

What is meant by animal protection in Germany? In order to prevent such serious mistreatment as in this case, there is the Animal Protection Act, which regulates the basic requirements for the species-appropriate keeping of animals. Loud tierschutzgesetz.net Paragraph 11 of the law is central to the protection of animals and stipulates that owners must ensure sufficient space, suitable accommodation and a needs-based supply of food and water. If you ignore these requirements, you not only face fines, but also serious consequences, such as the confiscation of animals.

A similar case occurred on January 19, 2023, when the Consumer Protection and Veterinary Affairs Department in Ehingen became aware of the impossible keeping conditions for two rabbits. These also lived under unreasonable conditions in cages that were too small and in their own feces, which not only represents a health risk but also indicates the owners' failure to take responsibility. It is shocking to see that many animals in Germany still have to live in such poor conditions.

A call for attention

The mistreatment that has now come to light has not only stunned the team at the animal shelter and the animal rights activists, but is also calling the public to attention. Animal owners are obliged to ensure the welfare of their animals. Education about the needs of animals should be a priority before deciding to acquire a pet. It is crucial to learn about the specific requirements of an animal species in order to counteract such animal cruelty.

In this regard, it is hoped that the recent incidents will raise awareness of animal welfare issues among the population. The fate of the freed animals in Cologne-Dellbrück is an example of how we as a community must do more to ensure that such crimes do not go unpunished.
