KVB line 18 becomes a bus line: track construction work starts in Mülheim!
The Cologne Transport Company (KVB) has announced a real restructuring process that particularly affects commuters and passengers. From June 14, 2025, line 18 in the city area on the right bank of the Rhine will be converted to a bus system due to extensive track construction work. The work on Wiener Platz in Mülheim is scheduled to last about a month, until July 13th, and during this time the section to “Mülheim Wiener Platz” will not be used.
The buses on the replacement line “113” will take over the rail service every 10 minutes. Passengers can use various stops in the direction of Mülheim:
- „Buchheim Herler Straße“ (Herler Straße vor Haus Nr. 94)
- „Bahnhof Mülheim“
- „Elisabeth-Breuer-Straße“
- „Mülheim Wiener Platz“
On the way back to Buchheim the replacement buses stop:
- „Mülheim Wiener Platz“
- „Bahnhof Mülheim“
- „Buchheim Herler Straße“
Travel times by bus vary: from Mülheim towards Buchheim it takes around 13 minutes for the 3 km route, while the return journey is much faster at around 8 minutes for 1.9 km. However, the KVB plans for line 18 to resume regular operations between “Mülheim Wiener Platz” and “Thielenbruch” from July 14th, which should be a welcome relief for everyone involved.
Other limitations and solutions
But there are changes on line 18 not only in Cologne, but also in neighboring Bonn. The route between Schwadorf and Bornheim will be closed from March 23rd to April 1st, 2025. During this time, line 18 runs separately, running from Cologne to Schwadorf and from Bonn to Bornheim. Replacement buses, especially line 118, are available for the Walberberg, Merten, Waldorf and Dersdorf stops. The regional trains RE5, RB26 and RB48 offer alternatives, as well as the unaffected line 16, which continues to offer a direct connection between Bonn and Cologne.
The track construction work in Cologne is not only intended for maintenance, but also to reduce noise through the installation of a “Continuously Elastic Rail System” (KES). This is a step in the right direction to reduce noise levels for residents. These measures are in line with the general trend aimed at making public transport in the region more sustainable and convenient.
Passengers and commuters are asked to adapt to the changes and use the appropriate alternatives. Regular updates and information can be found at KVB websites, the Bonn News and the VVS information.
