Drug war in Cologne: Defendant breaks his silence in the trial!

The drug war in Cologne and the surrounding area is making waves and has resulted in a spiral of violence with explosions and hostage-taking since the summer of 2024. In this context, three men are currently standing before the Cologne Regional Court who are being held responsible for serious robberies and organized crime. Among them is Aymen G., a 22-year-old German-Algerian, whose role in a particularly dramatic incident is highlighted. According to Rundschau Online he is said to have revealed information about a drug gang in Hürth that was storing 700 kg of marijuana. Armed gunmen raided the warehouse and stole about half of the marijuana, resulting not only in heavy financial loss but also in an increase in violence and crime in the area.

The trial, which has been running since the beginning of April, has now taken an exciting turn on the eleventh day of the trial. The 22-year-old spoke out about the allegations through his defense attorney and stated that he was ready to take responsibility for his actions. However, he vehemently denied having revealed the storage location. While his defense attorney emphasized that Aymen G. was not involved in the robbery and was in a shisha bar in Cologne at the time of the crime, there is an explosive turn of events: his cell phone was logged in near the crime scene for ten minutes on the day of the attack, June 22, 2024. This causes a stir. The young man asked the question: “Why would I have been near the robbery if I had been the traitor?”

A dark web

The events surrounding the drug war underline the growing problem of drug crime in Germany. In 2023, around 347,000 drug crime cases were recorded by the police. Cannabis cases in particular make up a large portion of these statistics. Over 208,000 of these offenses are cannabis-related, even though the substance has been partially legal since April 1, 2024. But the black market continues to thrive, indicating a clear decline in drug-related crime. A frightening detail: In 2023, the number of drug-related deaths in Germany was around 2,230, which represents a serious health and social problem, confirms Statista.

The current incidents in Cologne are not an isolated case. In an extensive network of drug gangs that also recruit from the Netherlands, young men are often on behalf of organized crime. These perpetrators, often from precarious backgrounds, carry out their jobs for little pay and are involved in a variety of criminal activities, ranging from kidnapping to torture to explosive attacks. In January 2025, there were already 23 arrests of defendants from Cologne drug gangs, which the police described as an “outstanding success,” as [ZDF Today](https://www.zdfheute.de/panorama/ criminalitaet/process-drogenkrieg-koeln-cannabis-100.html) reports.

The heightened security situation surrounding the trial is another sign of worrying developments. The police have significantly tightened precautions to protect both the trial and the witnesses involved. More and more people are watching the developments in this process with excitement - after all, there is a real danger that these dangerous drug gangs will continue to gain ground.
