Revolution in Porz: Robot Mazor” improves spine operations!
A very special helper has recently been used in surgery at the Porz am Rhein hospital: the “Mazor” robot arm. This innovative technology is used primarily in complicated spine operations and not only ensures greater precision, but also increased patient safety. According to a report by the Review “Mazor” helps with the precise placement of screws between the vertebrae to avoid nerve damage.
“We found that the robot keeps the drill stable, which significantly increases safety for the patients,” explains Prof. Dr. med. Jan Bredow from the Clinic for Orthopedics, Accident and Spinal Surgery. Porz Hospital is the only one in Cologne to use the robot, and around 30 successful procedures have already been recorded since its use about a month ago. The demand for operations using this modern technology is growing as more and more patients rely on innovative procedures.
Efficient operations through innovative technology
One of the most notable features of the “Mazor” is the ability to create a 3D model of the spine on a computer before surgery. This digital planning allows for precise screw placement during the procedure. The robot then compares the 3D model with an X-ray in the operating room to ensure everything goes smoothly.
“Mazor” allows for smaller incisions, minimizing blood loss. This use of robots is particularly valuable in complicated operations, such as scoliosis, where reduced precision in patient care could occur. While the surgeons remain in control of the procedure, the robot acts as a direct support, increasing screw placement accuracy to almost 99%. For comparison, experienced surgeons achieve approximately 94% accuracy.
Qualified surgeons for use
Currently there are only two surgeons, Prof. Dr. Bredow and Dr. med. Franziska Wallscheid, qualified to deal with “Mazor”. The two are highly motivated to take advantage of the new technology and further improve outcomes for their patients. This is also reflected in the increasing number of requests for procedures carried out with this modern robot assistant.
In summary, the robot “Mazor” at the Porz am Rhein Hospital opens an exciting chapter in spinal surgery and will benefit patients who want to rely on safer and more precise operations. The integration of the robot impressively shows how modern technology can make a difference in medicine.
