New President of the DGCH: Prof. Goldbrunner focuses on research!
Univ.-Prof. Dr. Roland Goldbrunner, Director of the Clinic and Polyclinic for Neurosurgery at the University Hospital of Cologne, has reached a new milestone in his career. With his election as President of the German Society for Surgery. V. (DGCH) for the 2025/26 term of office, he will not only take on a significant role in the German healthcare system, but also represent the interests of around 22,000 members. This society is the central voice of all surgical disciplines in Germany, and Goldbrunner wants to increase the visibility of the surgical professions in politics, especially with the Federal Ministry of Health. “Surgical research needs to be put more in the spotlight,” emphasizes Goldbrunner. This visibility is more important than ever as many surgical specialties, particularly the translational and clinical areas, are not experiencing the same momentum compared to other disciplines. The 143rd German Surgery Congress (DCK), which Goldbrunner is responsible for together with the presidents of the DGAV and DGKJCH, will provide a platform to present current research and developments and to promote young scientists.
A look at the German Surgery Congress
The motto of the upcoming congress is “Passion, Precision, Personalization”. He will cover numerous topics that are crucial to the future of surgery. New technical developments, interdisciplinary collaboration, the promotion of young talent as well as exchange with the Bundeswehr and organ donation are on the agenda. Particularly exciting will be the participation of a delegation from the Royal College of Surgeons of England from Great Britain, which is invited as a guest nation. Goldbrunner can look back on an impressive career. From 2020 to 2022 he was President of the German Society for Neurosurgery (DGNC) and during this time he worked intensively for the interests of neurosurgeons. His scientific focus is on neuro-oncological surgery and spinal surgery. He also heads the neuro-oncological tumor center and is spokesman for the spine center at the University Hospital of Cologne. He is now bringing this expertise into his new role and plans to establish the DCK as a central platform for surgical research and the promotion of young talent.
In his free time, Goldbrunner enjoys sports and enjoys rowing, running and sailing. This shows that he has a good knack for maintaining the balance between work and joy in life, not only at work but also in his private life.
With his election as President of the DGCH, exciting times lie ahead, both for Goldbrunner himself and for the entire surgical community in Germany. It remains to be seen what innovative impulses it will provide.
