Cologne-Mülheim is becoming the cycling capital: new street from Monday!

From next Monday, November 10th, 2025, an attractive bicycle route will be opened in Cologne-Mülheim, which will be a real benefit for cyclists. This redesign of Düsseldorfer Straße covers one kilometer between Mülheimer Freiheit and Heinrich-Gilsbach-Straße and is part of cycle commuter route 1. This route extends from Leverkusen to the center of Cologne and is intended to help increase cycling in the region. Express reports that the work will take around four weeks.

The only challenge for motorists will be diversionary traffic as the marking work will be carried out in three sections. In each of these sections, the northbound road will be converted to a one-way street, making passage in the opposite direction more difficult. But this is only a temporary measure to create a safe space for cyclists.

Rules and benefits for cyclists

A maximum speed of 30 km/h applies on the new bicycle street. This ensures that cyclists travel safely and undisturbed. Local measures will also improve the visibility of cyclists by removing old pavement thresholds which were often perceived as obstacles. In addition, a green accompanying line will be painted as a guidance system to better orient cyclists not only in Cologne, but also in the neighboring communities. Loud ADAC Only bicycles and e-scooters are allowed to ride in cycle streets; This regulation enables a clear separation from motorized traffic.

The importance of bicycle streets is growing, and signs for such streets are increasing in many German cities. A white bicycle in a blue circle signals the special traffic rules for bicycle streets: cyclists are allowed to ride next to each other, and motorized vehicles must maintain a minimum distance of 1.50 meters when overtaking. Such a system should help to promote the switch from cars to bicycles and at the same time help to relieve traffic.

A step into the future

The decision to expand the cycle commuter route was made in 2019. In this way, the city of Cologne shows that it has a good hand at promoting environmentally friendly mobility solutions. The federal government supports this approach as part of the National Cycling Plan (NRVP) and has the goal of further expanding cycling by 2030. The ADAC stands behind these initiatives because they are essential for sustainable transport development.

Although it can be tight for drivers, the redesign of Düsseldorfer Straße is a step in the right direction for Cologne. Cyclists can benefit from an improved and safer traffic area in the near future, while climate protection and the reduction of traffic problems are promoted. Cheers to the new developments in Cologne-Mülheim!
