Cologne's women show strength: Theater project for older talents starts!

Something is happening in Cologne – in the truest sense of the word! A group of committed women have come together to develop their own play entitled “The directions are female”, which will be performed on November 2nd, 2025, at 4 p.m., in the neighborhood and cultural center Et Kapellche e.V. The exciting process began in March, when Maranda and six other women from the Diakonie's intercultural meeting center in Cologne-Buchheim discovered their artistic talent under the direction of Franziska Schneeberger. The participants, aged 63 to 82, come from diverse cultural backgrounds: three come from Iran, and Maranda is a Sinti who already has stage experience.

But how does such a project come about? The need for cultural participation is particularly evident in the older generation. As the Rundschau Online reports, the women not only share their stories during their rehearsals, but also actively work on presenting their challenges. Pantomime depictions like that of “The Little Household” illustrate their daily struggles and desires. Valentina, who is considered the fittest at 82, plays a selfish man. Their life stories and the connection to each other create an interesting dynamic.

Cultural participation in old age

The importance of cultural participation opportunities in social institutions for seniors cannot be overestimated. As the Seniorenheim Magazin highlights, older people have a strong need for creative development and social interaction. Simple social gatherings are inadequate; High-quality cultural offerings are required that promote creativity. Even people with cognitive limitations, such as dementia, can actively participate in art projects and find joy in them.

The women's theater project in Cologne shows how important such cultural offerings are in counteracting isolation and psychological stress. Studies show that cultural activities can significantly improve the quality of life of the older generation. The central challenge is often health restrictions, mobility problems and financial burdens. Therefore, improving accessibility is an important step in ensuring cultural participation for seniors, as Sanimed states.

Strong together

As part of this year's project, the women not only did intensive theater work, but also got to know each other better. “We women are strong,” says Maranda, summarizing the motivation and the newly formed friendships. During the rehearsal weekends in Haus Altenberg, the participants raised their voices and practiced the art of theater. The social service instituted targeted programs to encourage creative desires and strengthen a sense of community.

The response and anticipation for the upcoming performance is great. Those interested should secure a reservation as space is limited. It shows once again how much cultural participation is not only a need, but also a human right that must be defended. Be inspired by the stories and the strength of these strong women who are active not only on but also behind the stage.
