Shock in Cologne-Sülz: Driver flees after serious accident with cyclist!
On the night of Friday, July 11th, there was a tragic traffic accident on Blankenheimer Straße in Sülz, in which a 27-year-old cyclist was seriously injured. According to that Cologne City Gazette The cyclist was driving towards Auerbachstrasse around 1:20 a.m. when she was hit by a car for reasons that are still unclear. The driver of the vehicle simply left the injured woman lying there and fled the scene of the accident. The car reversed away against the one-way street and disappeared in an unknown direction. The cyclist suffered serious head injuries and now has to be treated in a Cologne hospital.
The traffic commissioner immediately began an investigation and is urgently looking for the fleeing vehicle and witnesses. Information can be given by calling 0221 229-0 or by email to poststelle.koeln@polizei.nrw.de.
Increasing number of accidents among cyclists
A particular source of danger are collisions between cyclists and cars, which lead to a high number of seriously injured people. In 2023, 5,112 cyclists were seriously injured in Germany, with 178 fatalities. What is particularly alarming is the fact that all cycling accidents have increased over the last 15 years, while accidents alone are often caused by poor infrastructure.
Causes of accidents and safety measures
According to a study by insurers' accident research (UDV), which was carried out in cooperation with the University of Wuppertal, the risk of accidents is particularly high at junctions (intersections and junctions). These account for 68 percent of all serious cycling accidents. A big problem is often the lack of cycle paths and obstructions to visibility, which can put cyclists in dangerous situations.
Comprehensive measures are necessary to ensure road safety. The UDV demands, among other things, the removal of curbs at crossings and sufficient distance from tram tracks. Raising awareness among both cyclists and drivers through targeted campaigns could help reduce accident rates and increase road safety.
In Cologne and nationwide, cyclists are at increased risk of serious or even fatal accidents. These frightening trends make it clear that urgent action is needed both in the city and on the country roads.
