Handbag robbery in Cologne: Defendant admits seven robberies!

A worrying increase in handbag robberies in Cologne raises questions. Since the end of 2022, incidents have increased noticeably, prompting the police to set up a special investigation team. Finally, on March 13, a 33-year-old man was arrested on Neumarkt, suspected of being involved in numerous robberies. The trial against him began this week at the Cologne regional court, with the defendant stating, according to ksta.de, that he has committed a total of seven robberies, apart from one case which he denies.

There have been several frightening incidents in recent months. On February 26th, an 84-year-old woman was attacked in Nippes. Her attacker attacked her from behind and tried to snatch her purse. Despite her resistance, she suffered serious injuries, including a broken thigh, hip and shoulder. The loot from this robbery included 200 euros, a cell phone and personal documents.

Further raids in Cologne and Bonn

The list of other robberies is long and worrying. An overview of some of the most brutal acts:

  • 4. Januar: 53-jährige Frau in Köln-Lindenthal, Beute: 750 Euro und Handy.
  • 27. Dezember: 76-jährige Frau in Bonn, Handtasche vom Arm gerissen.
  • 24. Februar: 77-jährige Frau in Lindenthal, Beute: 120 Euro und Handy.
  • 1. März: 85-jährige Frau in Lindenthal, Beute: 300 Euro und Smartphone.
  • 11. März: 86-jährige Frau in Mülheim, Beute: 750 Euro.

The total value of the loot is around 6,200 euros. The defendant stated that he sold or threw away the stolen cell phones and spent the money on drugs.

Overall balance and reactions

The increased number of robberies is alarming and reflects a general increase in crime in the region, as documented by the [NRW Police](https://koeln.polizei.nrw/polizeiliche- criminal statistics). Such incidents not only have an impact on the immediate victims, but also shake the people's sense of security in Cologne.

Several legal proceedings have already been initiated in connection with various robbery offenses and a resulting “drug war” in the city. The brutal attacks on innocent citizens not only caused a stir locally, but also attracted national attention. The trial against the arrested man continues on Friday and further testimony is pending.

Citizens are urged to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police. It is up to all of us to raise awareness of such court cases and make our streets safer.
