Pedestrians hit in Cologne-Lindenthal – rail traffic disrupted!

An accident in Cologne-Lindenthal caused significant traffic disruptions on Thursday morning. On June 5th there was an incident in the Dürener Straße/Gürtel intersection area in which a 39-year-old pedestrian was hit by a car. Fortunately, the man only suffered minor injuries, which made the situation somewhat easier for the officers on site. However, the exact cause of the accident initially remains unclear, as the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger reports.

The KVB had to reroute two of its lines due to the accident. Line 7 only runs between Frechen Benzelrath and Haus Vorst and between Zündorf and Aachener Straße/Gürtel. Line 13 is also affected and only runs between Slabystrasse and Melatengurtel. In order to minimize the inconvenience for passengers, a replacement rail service is being set up, but the impact on overall traffic is clearly noticeable. The belt in the direction of Luxemburger Straße is significantly restricted by the blocking railway, so drivers have to be patient while the situation is clarified, as the Express adds.

Traffic insecurity in numbers

Manfred Wirsch, President of the German Road Safety Council, is therefore calling for more attention to be paid to pedestrians, as the number of people injured and killed has increased alarmingly in the last three years. In order to counteract this trend, a comprehensive pedestrian traffic strategy from the federal government is necessary. The heart of this strategy could be the amendment to the StVO, which allows municipalities to place zebra crossings in dangerous places without having to prove a particular risk. This could potentially also help to improve safety in accident hotspots such as the one in Cologne-Lindenthal, where drivers often have difficulty seeing adjacent pedestrian crossings.

It remains to be hoped that today's accident will be followed by lessons learned and such incidents can be avoided in the future. Road safety is a common concern – be it for pedestrians, cyclists or drivers. Everyone should be aware that caution and consideration must be the top priority when it comes to road traffic.
