A tragic incident occurred on Sunday evening, June 15, 2025, in Cologne, when a 63-year-old cyclist was hit by KVB line 15 on the corner of Alteburger Straße and Ubierring. The man suffered such serious injuries that he died at the scene of the accident. Witnesses reported that the cyclist may have been running a red light when the accident occurred, which poses a difficult task for the Cologne police investigation. The fire brigade and rescue service were on site with 35 emergency services and 14 vehicles, but an emergency doctor who happened to be there was no longer able to help the man.
The Cologne Transport Company (KVB) immediately informed about the operating restrictions on lines 15 and 16, which lasted until late in the evening. The Ubierring was temporarily closed to car traffic in the direction of Chlodwigplatz, which prompted the police to cordon off the area and redirect traffic. For passengers, this meant that line 15 continued as normal between Chorweiler and Eifelstraße and then took the route of line 12 to Eifelplatz. Line 16 was split into two parts and followed an alternative route via lines 3 and 4 to the LANXESS arena.
