Explosion in Köln-Kalk: Restaurant devastated, Mocro mafia suspected!

In the early morning hours of June 19, 2025, there was a violent explosion in a restaurant on the corner of Deutz-Kalker Straße and Deutzer Ring in Cologne-Kalk. According to derwesten.de, an unknown explosive device detonated in the entrance area of the restaurant around 4:30 a.m., shattering windows and throwing chairs onto the sidewalk. Fortunately, there were no guests in the restaurant, meaning there were no injuries at the time of the explosion.

Witnesses reported two men who fled towards the Deutz University of Technology after the loud bang. It remains unclear whether they may be suspects or mere witnesses. The crime scene has been cordoned off and police forensic experts are on duty to investigate the incident. The Cologne public prosecutor's office is also investigating and is looking for other witnesses who can provide information. Anyone interested can contact the police on 0221 229-0 or by email at poststelle.koeln@polizei.nrw.de.

Connection with organized crime

There is evidence of a possible connection with organized crime in the region. In the past, similar explosions in North Rhine-Westphalia have often shown links to the so-called “Mocro Mafia”. This group operates in the drug environment and has already made headlines in Cologne and the surrounding area. A significant incident was the theft of 350 kilos of cannabis from a drug gang in the summer, which led to shocking consequences such as torture and kidnapping, as WDR reports.

The role of the restaurant owner, who is also the father of the boss of the aforementioned drug gang, is particularly explosive. The son, a German-Iraqi, has been in custody since the beginning of the year after he was arrested at Charles de Gaulle Airport. He is accused of having ordered a series of attacks to bring the perpetrators of the cannabis theft to justice.

The situation of organized crime in Germany

Organized crime is a widespread problem in Germany that manifests itself in various forms. According to current statistics, there were a total of 642 investigations into organized crime in 2023, of which 264 investigations (approx. 41%) relate to drug trafficking and smuggling. Germany is therefore confronted with a variety of forms of crime, which are often characterized by family structures within clans in which many suspects have either Turkish or German nationality. Drug and narcotics crime is strongly influenced by foreign groups, such as the Mocro Mafia, as statista.com shows.

This current incident could therefore only be the tip of the iceberg in the context of ongoing clan crime in Germany, which has repeatedly led to violence and unrest in the cities in the past. The investigations by the police and public prosecutor's office are therefore not only important for the specific case, but could also provide greater insight into the organized crime networks in our region.
