Drug offenses in limelight: Raid causes a stir!
In Cologne-Kalk, the police hotspot team struck a decisive blow against the local drug scene on June 12, 2025. From 4:20 p.m. the team took control of a residential building on Buchforststrasse. The apartment of a 22-year-old suspected dealer, which was located in a former restaurant, was searched. The officers seized an impressive 600 grams of marijuana as well as a laptop, two cell phones, gas and a three-digit amount of cash. The accused was then taken to the police station for identification processing, while at the same time three other suspects were arrested - including a 21-year-old woman and two men aged 19 and 27. The search was carried out using a technical unit and a service dog. According to polizei.nrw, the investigation is still ongoing after the Cologne public prosecutor's office responded to information about cannabis trafficking.
The current raid is part of a larger strategy by the police, which has initiated over 170 investigations into drug-related crime in this hotspot alone since March. During this time, more than 3.5 kilograms of drugs as well as 55 weapons and dangerous items were seized.
High crime rate
The raid is not an exception. On July 27th, the Cologne police, together with the city administration, customs and riot police, carried out another comprehensive raid in Kalk. 131 people and 9 vehicles were checked, and seven search warrants were executed in five apartments and two cafés. A 29-year-old suspected drug dealer was arrested red-handed in his Audi, in which more than 16,000 euros in cash was found. The suspect faces an arrest warrant for gang-related drug trafficking. In the premises searched, not only drugs were seized, but also a pistol with 263 rounds of ammunition and burglary tools, which illustrates the dimensions of the problem. According to koeln.polizei.nrw, based on extensive investigations, the raid was a response to the high crime rate in this part of the city, which is particularly affected by narcotics and property crimes.
The statistical situation in Germany underlines the urgency of these measures. According to statista.com, over 347,000 drug crime cases were registered in 2023, which represents an increase compared to the previous year. The focus is particularly on cannabis, which has been partially legalized since April 1, 2024. However, trafficking cases remain a key issue, with 55,500 drug trafficking offenses recorded last year alone. It is expected that continuous police work will further curb the dangerous activities of the drug scene.
Given the seriousness of the situation and the large number of drug cases in chalky areas of the city, police presence and determination to address this issue is essential. It remains to be hoped that the police's efforts will bear fruit in the long term and improve the quality of life in Kalk.
