Cologne traffic in a state of emergency: Important changes at the start of the carnival!
On November 11, 2025, Cologne will be all about carnival, and anticipation for the opening of the session is in the air. In order to cope with the high number of visitors and the associated celebrations, the Cologne Transport Company (KVB) has announced some important adjustments to the timetable. A central hotspot of the celebrations will be the Heumarkt. Overcrowding could occur here, which will result in the stop being temporarily closed if necessary. In this case, lines 1, 7 and 9 will pass Heumarkt without stopping. From 7 a.m., KVB line 5 will also head to the “Rathaus” stop without stopping, and line 17 will be stopped completely. A change will be necessary, especially for passengers from Bonn who have to change to other lines at Chlodwigplatz or Severinstrasse.
Traffic adjustments for trams
The diversions and changes are not just limited to bus traffic. From 7 a.m., KVB line 9 will be rerouted via Aachener Straße and the Belt route. From 10 a.m., line 16 will only run to the “Ubierring” stop and will be interrupted there. For line 18 there will be a separation between “Barbarossaplatz” and “Weißhausstraße” from 8:30 a.m., with replacement buses running between the stops.
The situation in bus transport
While most bus routes will operate according to the “annual timetable of a normal Tuesday”, there are also some adjustments here. The stop on line 106 will be moved in front of the Chamber of Crafts. Lines 132 and 133 will also stop from there. However, passengers on line 142 must expect changes, as the “Eifelwall/Stadtarchiv” and “Bf. Süd” stops will no longer be available.
Over 250 employees, including external service providers, are deployed to ensure everything runs smoothly. The KVB also reserves the right to make numerous other situation-related changes, depending on the current rush and needs. In this way, the company will ensure that all celebrants can reach their destinations easily and that the carnival atmosphere in Cologne can be celebrated undisturbed.
