Cologne is becoming a shopping mile: Renovation of Schildergasse starts in 2026!
Schildergasse in Cologne will soon be even more attractive! A major renovation project is imminent: the former Deichmann building is being redesigned. Deichmann itself has already moved into a smaller shop at the beginning of 2025 and will use this time to temporarily use the larger building.
The renovation brings a breath of fresh air to Schildergasse: retail space will be created on the ground and first floors as well as office space on the fourth and fifth floors. A total of around 2,400 square meters are now available. Rumors are already circulating about a new tenant for the Deichmann building, but the details remain under wraps. The facade will also change: the old entrance will be replaced by a large shop window front over two floors.
New flagship store from Deichmann
Deichmann has already opened a new flagship store. This attracts with a generous range of 290 square meters, ranging from shoe fashion and accessories to a sporty segment for the whole family. This new concept places particular emphasis on a modern look and a spacious feeling Corpsit reported.
Customers can also look forward to a striking video wall and digital foot measurements for children's feet. Energy efficiency is also a big issue; using LED lighting systems can save energy costs of 30 to 40%. The new store is open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and special promotions will be offered at the opening on January 17th and 18th.
Expansion of the Weltstadthaus
In addition to the renovation of the Deichmann building, there are also important developments at the Weltstadthaus at Schildergasse 65–67. The Cologne Urban Development Committee has approved the redesign, which will be led by the renowned Renzo Piano Building Workshop. An attractive mix of uses is being created here, which includes retail, office space, restaurants and even event locations. The aim is to strengthen Schildergasse as a location for luxury retail, like Schildergasse Cologne reported.
The new building is particularly interesting, as it uses CO₂-reduced construction methods and stays below the 40 meter limit in order to preserve the view of Cologne Cathedral. A public roof terrace with restaurants will also be integrated to offer visitors a lively place in the evenings.
With these changes, Schildergasse shows that it is preparing for the future and will continue to be an essential part of Cologne's retail sector. The combination of new construction and renovation as well as the consideration of sustainability will certainly make many hearts beat faster.
