Green light for Cologne line expansion: A milestone for public transport!

A green light for the expansion of KVB Line 1 between Cologne-Weiden and Bensberg provides a breath of fresh air in Cologne's local transport planning. The transport committee of the NRW state parliament has decided to include the project in the public transport requirements plan, which means that the expansion of the stops for the new 90-meter long trains is now generally eligible for funding. This step gives the city of Cologne the opportunity to begin work “immediately”, while the inspection for the city center area can take place at the same time.

However, whether the route of KVB lines 1, 7 and 9 will be expanded above or underground in the future remains a controversial issue. NRW Transport Minister Oliver Krischer (Greens) emphasized that the current decision does not represent a preliminary decision against a tunnel. Two weeks ago, the original decision was postponed due to criticism from the CDU and SPD, who viewed the transport minister's plans as inadequate. However, on April 3, these parties decided to only continue with the tunnel planning. Krischer ignored calls for additional reviews of changes and additions to the planned tunnel.

Political debates and different opinions

The discussion about the expansion is lively. Critics from the CDU and SPD express concerns that without the tunnel option the entire project may not be eligible for funding. The SPD is therefore calling for the temporary expansion to be approved together with the tunnel as a package. This opinion shows that the political fronts in Cologne have become very hardened. The FDP councilor, on the other hand, welcomed the extension of the platforms, but also wants the tunnel. One thing is clear: Opinions about the best solution are as diverse as the Cologne districts themselves.

In addition to the improvements to KVB line 1, two other measures were also included in the public transport requirements plan. This includes the extension of the Süd Stadtbahn to Rondorf and Meschenich as well as an expansion of capacity on the KVB lines 4, 13 and 19. These include the extension of the above-ground platforms and important fire protection retrofits. All of these steps are part of a comprehensive vision for local public transport in Cologne.

A city on the move

The developments surrounding the KVB show that Cologne is in a dynamic phase of change. While some measures have already been initiated, there are still many questions that need to be clarified. Whether residents will agree to the coming changes or continue to push for the various solutions remains to be seen. One thing is certain: Cologne's local transport has the potential to make the city even more livable. And while the construction of infrastructure is progressing in the distance, many Cologne residents are also celebrating important anniversaries in their city. For example, the popular morning magazine “Good Morning America” recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, which shows that time and change go hand in hand in the media landscape.

Things remain exciting in the cathedral city, where construction and planning is taking place in many places at the same time. It is clear that Cologne still has a good hand when it comes to promoting the mobility of its citizens and at the same time setting the course for the future.
