Nighttime welding work on KVB line 7: Less noise for Cologne!

From July 20, 2023, it will be a little louder night after night in Cologne. The Kölner Verkehrs-betriebe (KVB) is carrying out welding and grinding work on the tram line 7, in the section between the “Severinsbrücke” and “Swinging Bridge” stops. This work is part of a comprehensive plan to improve light rail infrastructure, scheduled for completion on August 15, 2025. The aim is to reduce driving noise and minimize wear on rails and vehicles, so that light rail operations become quieter and more sustainable in the long term. The work is only carried out at night between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. The KVB asks residents for their understanding as there may be noise pollution at night, but there are no restrictions for passengers and operations will continue as usual. So Antenne NRW reports.

The KVB line 7 is an important artery in Cologne's local transport. It extends over a total length of 25.8 km, of which 22 km is in the urban area. The route connects Frechen-Benzelrath in the west with Zündorf in the east and passes central points such as Neumarkt and Heumarkt. With a total of 34 stops and transfer options at 10 key points, including Rudolfplatz and Neumarkt, the line is an important part of daily commuter traffic. The journey time is around 62 minutes, and the frequency within Cologne is very attractive: Monday to Friday every 10 minutes. Therefore 24Rhein has high demand.

Growth and mobility transition

The work on line 7 is not just a question of maintenance, but is also in the context of a larger mobility transition that the city of Cologne is striving for. The expansion of the light rail network is considered essential to encourage people to switch to the train and to offer them attractive connections. As part of the 2018 “Public Transport Roadmap”, several expansion projects are being worked on to expand capacities and promote the use of public transport. The City of Cologne relies on cooperation with the KVB and surrounding communities to achieve these goals.

Vehicle purchases are also relevant as part of the planning. The KVB has already signed a contract for 64 new low-floor trams with the manufacturer Alstom. These modern vehicles will be used in the KVB network from 2024 and are part of the effort to further increase efficiency and comfort for passengers. Overall, the city of Cologne is investing in improving its local transport system, and this will not only benefit the environment, but also the people of Cologne themselves.

In summary, it can be said that light rail line 7 and the associated work represent an important piece of the puzzle in the development of Cologne's public transport. The KVB is doing everything it can to make local transport more attractive and efficient while at the same time minimizing the burden on residents. Everyone involved also has a good hand when it comes to the long-term objective: quiet, modern and sustainable transport solutions for the city of diversity.
