Cologne's Idiot Bridge” in the spotlight again: truck gets stuck!

The bridge in Cologne-Deutz, known as the “Idiot Bridge”, caused a stir again on October 9, 2025. At around 12:30 p.m. a truck with a Dutch license plate got stuck on the bridge. The driver was able to drive the tractor away, but the unloaded trailer remained stuck. This unfortunate situation meant that traffic had to be rerouted around the danger zone until the semi-trailer could be recovered by a towing company at night. This incident is not the first of its kind this year - on July 2nd, a Polish truck got stuck on the bridge, and June 26th brought another incident in which a German driver misjudged the height of the bridge. wa.de reports that...

At this point, drivers repeatedly have to make the painful experience of overlooking the clearance height of 4.30 meters, which is clearly marked by numerous signs. On June 18, a truck even collided with the bridge, but was able to continue driving and escape before it was later caught by the police. A comprehensive problem that is compounded by the insufficient altitude information on top of that.

Renovation of the bridge

The bridge is not designed for truck traffic, and its difficulties appear to be a concern for the city. Maintenance work is currently taking place on Inner Canal Road, which is part of the larger context of bridge renewal. Pedestrian and bicycle traffic was restricted from September while the main work was completed on August 29th. Minor remaining work should be completed by the end of the year. The new bridge deviates from the traditional round arches and has a clearance height of 4.50 meters. WDR reports that... The total costs of the construction project amount to 13.5 million euros.

This renewal is part of Deutsche Bahn's comprehensive S3 restructuring program, which aims to improve punctuality, reliability and profitability. A measure that could have a positive impact on many commuters and freight transport - once the bridge is converted to rail operations.

Information for road users

At a time when digital information is becoming increasingly important, the Federal Office of Cartography and Geodesy (BKG) is offering a new service to provide information about bridges and underpasses with restrictions. Clearance heights, widths and total weights are recorded. BKG informs that… The data is provided in a Germany-wide overview that is ideal for professional drivers and road users. This shows an important development in dealing with the challenges on the roads.

It remains to be hoped that the situation at the “Idiot Bridge” will improve quickly and future accidents can be avoided. The new bridge could help ensure that the rude awakening for truck drivers in Cologne will soon be a thing of the past.
