Cologne in turmoil: rail traffic is at a standstill after a track accident and fatal collision!
On Sunday evening, several incidents in Cologne caused significant restrictions on public transport. Loud Cologne City Gazette Train traffic between Cologne Central Station and Cologne Messe/Deutz came to a standstill. The reason for this was a person who was on the track on the Hohenzollern Bridge. The police were able to get the affected person off the tracks around 9 p.m., but delays and partial cancellations for several train lines were already expected.
The following lines were affected by the closure: The RE 5 (RRX) and the RE 1 (RRX) had to be rerouted, while the RB 25 and RB 38 were partly canceled between different stations. These inefficiencies caused long traffic jams at train stations and frustration among travelers.
Accident with a tragic outcome
At the same time, a fatal accident occurred in the southern part of Cologne. A man was hit by a KVB train at the Altenburger Straße/Ubierring intersection and died as a result of his injuries, reports Express. The affected trains on lines 15 and 16 were temporarily out of service during the operation. The police are investigating to clarify the exact circumstances of the accident.
Such incidents are not uncommon in Cologne. In 2024 there were a total of 174 accidents between KVB trains and pedestrians, like t online reported. This included several serious injuries and even fatal accidents. Common causes for this are crossing tracks illegally and turning in confusing places.
A look at security
The Cologne Transport Company (KVB) has tried to minimize the risk of accidents in recent years. Nevertheless, drivers and passers-by are often severely affected physically and psychologically by these tragic events. In 2024, 21 people were seriously injured and 233 were slightly injured in accidents involving KVB railways. Five accidents, including one fatal, were even classified as suicides.
You can usually rely on the KVB when it comes to anticipatory driving. Thanks to numerous training and further education measures, the drivers are well prepared, but safety on the tracks must also be taken seriously by pedestrians and drivers.
Observations over the last few years show that we all need to have a good hand when it comes to road safety. If we follow the rules and respect the traffic signs, we may be able to avoid one or two accidents in the future. Stay safe!
