Construction site chaos in Siegerland: trains and buses are at a standstill!
There are currently some challenges to be overcome on rail transport between Siegen and Cologne. The connection Siegen newspaper reports that the Rhein-Sieg-Express RE 9 train connection, which runs from Aachen main station via Cologne to Siegen main station, is repeatedly struggling with delays and cancellations. The route, which is around 140 kilometers long and takes an average journey time of more than two hours, is causing dissatisfaction among passengers.
The situation is made even more complicated by regular disruptions on the Rothaarbahn from Bad Berleburg to Betzdorf. This is also served by the HLB and, like the RE 9, has to contend with frequent delays and cancellations. Anyone who relies on these routes must be patient.
Construction sites and traffic disruptions
A look at the streets shows that traffic is coming to a standstill there too. Construction sites are a recurring problem in the Siegerland, Wittgenstein region and the Olpe and Altenkirchen districts. According to the Siegen newspaper There is, among other things, a complete closure on federal highway 508 in Kredenbach, which is resulting in traffic jams. Significantly restricted traffic conditions will also be expected in Allenbach and as part of the Schleifmühlchen mega project, for which the first construction phase began in May 2023.
For commuters and travelers this means: you should plan enough time. The frequent delays in both modes of transport, both on trains and on the roads, mean that it is better to allow for some buffer.
Public transport is on the rise
But there are also positive developments. According to data from the VDV The number of passengers in public transport has been increasing in popularity again since 2022, after the pandemic previously resulted in massive declines. Around 26 million passengers are transported by bus and train in Germany every day. This not only has positive environmental aspects, as public transport saves around 10 million car journeys every day, but also helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The numbers are particularly impressive in rail freight transport: in 2023, VDV companies transported 290 million tons of goods. This shows how important a well-functioning transport system is for the economy and the environment. The sustainable mobility economy creates value that contributes to a broad economic base.
