Series camp 2025: record attendance and new trends in Cologne

An exciting event for the media industry took place in Cologne this week: The series camp celebrated its 11th anniversary in the cathedral city and attracted over 900 trade visitors from the TV and film industry. This means that the record number from previous years was once again significantly exceeded. “With this number, we have exceeded a magical limit,” says Gerhard Maier, co-founder of the festival. Originally started in Munich, where around 300 participants mostly came from Germany, the event has now developed into an international highlight that presents various series, including international productions and numerous works created in Germany.

The focus was particularly on new products such as the RTL+ series “Softies” and the ZDF production “Chabos”. There were also exciting formats such as “Rembetis – The Ghost Hunters” and the Sky documentary series “Love Scam”. Co-managing director Malko Solf highlighted the success of the festival format: “It is impressive to see how the series camp has developed and the innovative strength that comes together here.”

A big networking event

The series camp took place as part of ANGA COM, which was held in Deutz and attracted an impressive 22,000 participants. Despite the proximity to an evacuation area due to World War II bombs, the trade fair was a complete success. ANGA COM managing director Peter Charissé did not miss the opportunity to praise the industry and the high number of participants. More than 250 speakers were active in over 60 panels that dealt with the latest trends and developments in the media landscape.

The ANGA COM not only offers the space for exciting market discussions, but also listens in the ARD Degeto “Streaming Campus”, where around 100 producers and creative people came together. At the event, ARD Degeto boss Thomas Schreiber emphasized the search for new, touching formats. The media library in particular receives a lot of attention; Here fiction accounts for more than half of the usage, as Christoph Pellander pointed out.

Trends and innovations

The topics of artificial intelligence and its impact on the media and entertainment industry were also very popular in Cologne. According to a recent market research article, AI opens up new possibilities that are particularly relevant in film production and streaming services. Companies are increasingly relying on AI to optimize payment processes and create personalized content. Netflix has increased its number of subscribers to an impressive 277 million, not least through data-driven decisions regarding their content.

The series camp also presented the “Story Exchange,” which offered producers and creatives pitch events and networking opportunities. The festival will continue to grow in the coming years, the Seriecamp Conference will take place again in 2025 from June 3rd to 5th, with ZDF Studios as the main partner. Here, participants can look forward to the topics of artificial intelligence, project financing and international co-productions.

Next year, from May 19th to 21st, ANGA COM will open its doors again. The future of the media market looks bright - Cologne remains the place for creative minds and innovative ideas in the series landscape. With early bird accreditations, which are now available, the course can be set for the upcoming event.
